BEYOND PHOTOGRAPHY – DIALOGUE

CURATED BY DOMENICO DE CHIRICO WITH MARIALUISA PASTÒ

BEYOND PHOTOGRAPHY – DIALOGUE is the special section of MIA Photo Fair curated by Domenico de Chirico and reserved for national and international galleries. The exhibition projects, specifically tailored for the fair, aim to create a stimulating dialogue between a monographic photographic proposal and one whose expressive medium investigates alternative forms of artistic research including sculpture, installation, painting, performance, and video. In this perspective, Beyond Photography emerges as a privileged meeting point that places Photography in ‘dialogue’ with other languages of contemporary art.

The 1980s and 1990s framed photography within a process that increasingly defined it as an autonomous art form, identifying it as a medium capable of investigating reality as much as painting and sculpture, in an equally authoritative and even more immediate way in response to sensory challenges from an era constantly revolutionized, decoded, and shaped by technology.

However, common perception, also legitimized by a certain tendency towards simplification conveyed by educational spheres, remains somewhat tainted by a reluctance that tends to default separate photography from contemporary art.

It is therefore necessary, if not imperative, to re-examine the trajectories of the history of photography by speaking the codes of art, thus distancing it from that stereotyped instant that confines and shapes it as a separate form of expression.

Liberating photography from the remnants of such heritage means creating new access channels to the art market, promoting a more balanced development and making it more accessible even to young talents.
