Prize winners CODICE MIA 2017 and Charles Jing Grant

First Prize CODICE MIA 2017

Davide Monteleone

His work was recognized for his distinguished representation of complex social and political scenes with a very particular and focused vision.

Second Prize CODICE MIA 2017

Laura El-Tantawy

Laura impressed the jury with her personal and political journey, which she expressed beautifully both in her individual photos and extraordinary self published book.

Special Mention

Margherita Chiarva

The administration of CODICE MIA was very pleased with the extremely high level of the participants, which made a very difficult choice to select the winners. While it became clear who would be the first and second prize, there remained one artist that the jury felt deserved a special mention. So, through the generosity of our patron Charles Jing, we are offering a one time special mention prize of 1000 euros to Margherita Chiarva for her sensitive and diarystic exploration.

CODICE MIA, this year in its V edition, is placed within the program of MIA Photo Fair as landmark event for the mid-career artists who want to establish a connection with active figures in international collecting. Following a rigorous selection, 45 photographers will have the privilege of meeting face to face collectors, art advisors and curators of corporate and institutional collections from around the world. The meetings have the typical form of a portfolio review, but innovative and unique is the choice of interlocutors. The reviewers are experts of the fine-art photography market, those who take the decisions for their own private collections or for corporate and museum collections.

Conceived and organised by Enrica Viganò, CODICE MIA project has had overwhelmingly positive feedback from both participating artists and reviewers. On one hand, in fact, for collectors the chance to discover artists, acquire works, support projects and endorse photographers is really exciting. And, on the other hand, for the artists the opportunity to exchange ideas and information with major personalities in the photography market is definitely an advantage hard to get otherwise.

News of the 2017 edition is the establishment of the Charles Jing Grant for the best portfolio, added to the consolidated CODICE MIA Award. It will be awarded to the first place a gross prize of 7,000 Euro,  in addition to the free concession of a booth in the 2018 edition of MIA Photo Fair in Milan. The second winner will be awarded with a gross prize of 3,000 Euro. The awards will go to the artists who will present the most significant visual research, for style and originality in the use of photographic language. Both winners will be selected by a jury composed by Enrica Viganò and by all the reviewers.

CODICE MIA 2016 award has been assigned to Jovana Popić (Croatian-Serbian artist living in Berlin), who stood out because of the clarity of her work, her creativity and lucidity with which she presented her works. Her ability to be multitalented artist, with a wide vision which led her to win the Codice MIA 2016 Award. Her works will be exhibited during MIA Photo Fair 2017.

CODICE MIA will once again be presenting the formula that has proven so successful in the previous editions. The high profile of the reviewers invited will correspond to an equally high level among the participants: a limited number of photographers (45) – carefully selected by the MIA PHOTO Fair Selection Committee among the applications received – will show and describe their work to the experts.

The panel of specialists of CODICE MIA 2017 will consist of:

CODICE MIA will take place on Saturday 11th March 2017, every participant will have the opportunity to submit their work to 4 of the prestigious trendsetters of the photographic market, in meetings lasting 20 minutes each.

MIA Photo Fair will also offer an interpreting service to facilitate, if necessary, communication with reviewers of any language.
