Codice MIA

The jury gave the first prize to Maya Daniels because her research into the Elf tradition and language has resulted in a creative work with a perfect balance between photographic expression and ethnological concept. She was able to cross through disciplines, using archive images together with contemporary visions.

The second prize goes to Luca Locatelli who investigates environmental mysteries of today’s world. The jury was very impressed with the high quality of the photographs and the subjects he was able to find and share with us.

A honorable mention was given to Giulio Di Sturco because both projects he presented were developped in the most meaningful way and the images touched the jury for their moving beauty.

At its sixth edition, the traditional appointment of CODICE MIA sees its relevance confirmed within the program of MIA Photo Fair as landmark event for the mid-career artists who want to establish a connection with international experts of collecting. The photographers, selected by a rigorous jury, will have the privilege of face-to-face meeting with leading figures of the world of photography, such as collectors and curators of corporate collections. The meetings have the typical form of a portfolio review, but innovative and unique is the choice of interlocutors. The reviewers are experts of the fine-art photography market, those who take the decisions for their own private collections or for corporate and museum collections.

Conceived and organised by Enrica Viganò, CODICE MIA project has had overwhelmingly positive feedback from both participating artists and reviewers over time. On one hand, in fact, for collectors the chance to discover artists, support projects and endorse photographers is really exciting. On the other hand, for the artists the opportunity to exchange ideas and information with major personalities in the photography market, building relationships that often last for years, is definitely an advantage hard to get otherwise.

Also in the next edition CODICE MIA comprises the prestigious Charles Jing Grant for the best portfolio, added to the consolidated CODICE MIA Award. It will be awarded to the first place a prize of 7.000 Euros, in addition to the free concession of a booth in the 2020 edition of MIA Photo Fair in Milan. The second winner will be awarded with a prize of 3.000 Euros. The awards will go to the artists who will present the most significant visual research, for style and originality in the use of photographic language. Both winners will be selected by a jury composed by Enrica Viganò and by all the reviewers.

Davide Monteleone won the CODICE MIA 2017 first prize: three-times winner of World Press Award, his work was recognized for his distinguished representation of complex social and political scenes with a very particular and focused vision. The second prize was assigned to Laura El-Tantawy – Egyptian photographer, born in 1980, whose research combines her cultural identity with the Egyptian one – who impressed the jury with her personal and political journey, expressed extraordinarily both in her individual photos and in her original self published book. Thanks to the generosity of our patron Charles Jing, a one-time special mention prize of 1.000 Euros was offered to Margherita Chiarva for her sensitive and diaristic exploration.

CODICE MIA 2019 will present a novelty aimed at increasing the exclusivity of the event: only a very limited number of 30 photographers – carefully selected by the MIA PHOTO Fair Selection Committee among the applications received – will show and describe their work to the experts.

The panel of specialists of CODICE MIA 2019 will consist of:

  • Damien Bachelot, collector – Paris, France
  • Hazel Collins, collector – London, England
  • Charles Jing, collector – Atlanta, USA
  • Dominique and Sylvain Levy, collectors – Paris, France
  • Hans Porsche, collector – London, England
  • Joëlle and Eric Romba, collectors and Presidents of ROCCA Foundation – Berlin, Germany

CODICE MIA will take place on Friday 22th March 2019, every participant will have the opportunity to submit their work to 3 of the prestigious trendsetters of the photographic market, in meetings lasting 20 minutes each.

MIA Photo Fair will also offer an interpreting service to facilitate, if necessary, communication with reviewers of any language.
