The Fotobookfestival Kassel invites photographers to present their so-far unpublished* photobooks to an international public and to eminent experts. In 2014 the best 50 books selected by a pre-jury will be exhibited at international photo events in Athens, Cologne, Dublin, Madrid, Milano, Oslo, Paris, Rome, Paraty and Sao Paulo. From these 50 titles, 3 winners will be chosen by an international jury of experts at the PhotoBookMuseum Cologne in September. The winner of the First Prize will be given the opportunity to realize their dummy as a »real« book in cooperation with our production partner, k-books, Germany, and will be reported on in the magazine European Photography. The First Prize also includes, apart from the book production, the presentation of the photobook-work during the next Fotobookfestival in Kassel in 2015. The Second Prize is a book production voucher valued at € 500; the Third Prize is a voucher valued at € 300 given by our partner, k-books.

Who can enter?
Any photographer from around the world who accepts the terms and conditions can participate by registering for the competition and submitting an unpublished* work as a book. The participant states that the submitted work has never been published by a publishing house.

We require physical printed books of all the entries sent to us by the photographers/authors. Registration closes on (new!) 15 May 2014. The latest arrival date for the dummies is also 15 May 2014. Entries can only be registered online. We charge € 32.00 per entry and book. There is no limitation to the number of entries per person. If you would like your book to be returned to you, then we will require a further postage and handling charge per entry: within Germany € 8.00; within Europe € 13.00; all other countries € 20.00. Payments can only be made online via our Paypal account during the registration process. Dummies that make the shortlist will be shown during photo events in Athens, Dublin, Cologne, Madrid, Milano, Oslo, Paraty, Paris, Rome and Sao Paulo. Because some of these events take place at the same time, we request that you send a second copy of the dummy. You may send two copies anyway or you send one more copy immediatly after getting the information, that your dummy has been selected for the shortlist. The jury session is May 24th. Should a second copy not be available, your dummy will miss out on some of the overlapping exhibitions.

Codice MIA, the absolutely unprecedented and innovative portfolio interpretation, totally focused on the photographic market, produced a very positive reaction from the 45 photographers who, selected by the Scientific Committee, submitted their portfolio to some of the leading international collection experts.

Codice MIA also awarded the prize to Mattia Insolera, for “the ability – according to the justification – to narrate with great visual force the historic transformation of the Mediterranean basin as the cradle of Western civilization. Competition: BORN ELECTRIC by BMW i.

BMW i, partner of MIA Fair since its second edition, confirms its participation, promoting the photographic competition Born Electric by BMW i, in conjunction with MIA Fair and Nikon Italia. The entrants in the on-line competition – – were required to submit photographs on the theme of sustainable mobility, the focus of the environmental philosophy developed by BMW and by the sub brand BMW i, via the production of low emission vehicles, like the new electric city car BMW i3. The winner was selected by a committee during MIA Fair.

The winning image of the competition BORN ELECTRIC by BMW was that by Marco Manara since it stood out for the originality and creativity with which he developed the theme of the competition: the contemporary and future perspective of energy and environmental sustainability in the urban context. The message sent by Marco Manara “Green energy for a better future” complements the aesthetic value of the image, which is able to interpret a future that the author himself hopes will be better thanks to new technologies developed by BMW.
