Capace com’è di interpretare con grande espressività la tridimensionalità, la fotografia resta tuttavia un po’ prigioniera di una bidimensionalità a cui nel tempo ha spesso cercato di sfuggire. Per farlo, ha trovato nella ricerca artistica una possibile soluzione che non si limitasse, come nel caso delle riprese stereo, all’effetto sorprendente. Su questa linea si è mosso Max Falsetta Spina, giovane autore poliedrico: da una formazione che lo ha portato a esprimersi nel campo della scenografia applicata è approdato alla sperimentazione di soluzioni profondamente innovative trovando fonti di ispirazione nelle opere di chi, da Umberto Boccioni a David Hockney, si è confrontato creativamente con la dimensione dello spazio. Se le iniziali opere erano incentrate sulla tecnica del collage applicato al ritratto e su quella della moltiplicazioni dei piani per ottenere immagini scomposte di architetture futuribili, in tempi più recenti l’autore ha radicalizzato la sua ricerca. Sono così nati nuovi lavori che potremmo definire metafotografici perché nati dall’intenzione di un andare oltre volto a superare dialetticamente il tradizionale rapporto fra oggetto e soggetto. Le linee nette che definiscono le prospettive entrano nel vivo dell’immagine incidono la superficie della carta fotografica fino a consentirle di ripiegarsi su se stessa e aprirsi, come un’inedita scultura, alla tridimensionalità. Max Falsetta Spina induce alla ricerca dello spazio incontaminato celato dietro l’immagine e chi osserva si trova di fronte a una superficie specchiata. E’ questa a rivelargli un’antica eppur contemporanea verità: ogni opera esiste nella consapevolezza di chi la guarda.

Capable as it is of interpreting three-dimensionality with great expressiveness, photography nevertheless remains somewhat of a prisoner of a two-dimensionality from which over time it has often tried to escape. To do so, it has found in artistic research a possible solution that would not be limited, as in the case of stereo shots, to striking effect. Max Falsetta Spina, a young, multifaceted author, has moved along this line: from a training that led him to express himself in the field of applied scenography, he has arrived at the experimentation of profoundly innovative solutions, finding sources of inspiration in the works of those who, from Umberto Boccioni to David Hockney, have creatively confronted the dimension of space. If the initial works focused on the technique of collage applied to portraits and on that of the multiplication of planes to obtain decomposed images of futuristic architecture, in more recent times the author has radicalized his research. This has given rise to new works that we could call metaphotographic because they were born from the intention of a going beyond aimed at dialectically overcoming the traditional relationship between object and subject. The sharp lines that define the perspectives enter into the heart of the image etch the surface of the photographic paper until they allow it to fold in on itself and open, like an unprecedented sculpture, to three-dimensionality. Max Falsetta Spina induces a search for the pristine space concealed behind the image, and the viewer is confronted with a mirrored surface. It is this that reveals to him an ancient yet contemporary truth: every work exists in the awareness of the beholder.

Un’immagine che si svela per immagini. Si sviluppa per piani moltiplicati all’infinito la fotografia di Max Falsetta Spina, da 25 anni dietro l’obiettivo, sempre alla ricerca di nuove suggestioni da esplorare. La sua ricerca continua, partita da interventi diretti prima sull’inquadratura e poi sul supporto fotografico, mai in versione digitale, però, perché Falsetta Spina è un artista concreto, che ama agire sulla fotografia con le proprie mani. Il suo percorso artistico prende così avvio da esperienze sulle operazioni di sviluppo in camera oscura, immediatamente all’inizio della carriera, con esiti che portano a una fotografia materica, in cui le superfici si offrono all’occhio in processi di sgranatura e disaggregazione a ricercare i naturali esiti di trasformazione del quotidiano. Negli anni successivi lavora al collage applicato sia a visioni urbane che alla ritrattistica, giungendo oggi alla definizione di una fotografia che ribalta i piani costruttivi tradizionalmente intesi e raggiunge letteralmente la terza dimensione. In un quarto di secolo l’artista ha catturato con il suo occhio e la sua mano città e persone sempre con l’intenzionalità di mostrarne il lato nascosto, quello più profondo, interpretato da una mente che ama le peripezie prospettiche, grazie anche all’attività di scenografo condotta in parallelo alla fotografia e ormai nota ad alcuni tra i più importanti brand mondiali dell’haute couture e dell’hi-tech.

An image that reveals itself through images. It is developed by infinitely multiplied planes the photography of Max Falsetta Spina, for 25 years behind the lens, always looking for new suggestions to explore. His research continues, starting from direct interventions first on the framing and then on the photographic support, never in a digital version, however, because Falsetta Spina is a concrete artist, who loves to act on photography with his own hands. His artistic path thus starts from experiences on darkroom development operations, immediately at the beginning of his career, with outcomes that lead to a material photography, in which surfaces offer themselves to the eye in processes of graining and disaggregation to search for the natural outcomes of transformation of the everyday. In later years he worked on collage applied to both urban visions and portraiture, arriving today at the definition of a photography that overturns traditionally understood constructive planes and literally reaches the third dimension. In a quarter of a century, the artist has captured with his eye and hand cities and people always with the intentionality of showing their hidden side, the deeper one, interpreted by a mind that loves perspective peripeteia, thanks also to the activity of set designer conducted in parallel with photography and now known to some of the most important world brands of haute couture and hi-tech.
