Per la sua nuova serie 'Fringe Nature', JACQUIE MARIA WESSELS cattura alcuni frammenti di un mondo naturale che sopravvive negli aspri paesaggi industriali delle periferie urbane. Le sue fotografie pittoriche, sorprendenti per la tavolozza cromatica e per l’utilizzo dell’illuminazione, sono allo stesso tempo ruvide e poetiche. Durante la realizzazione del precedente progetto 'Garage Stills', la Wessels iniziò gradualmente a sentire il bisogno di un contatto con la natura mentre fotografava il meraviglioso universo dei garage tradizionali. Anche se la sensazione dello spettatore è quella di trovarsi immersi in un luogo selvaggio e naturale, i piccoli dettagli all'interno di queste immagini tradiscono la presenza di una fabbrica o di un'autofficina. Le sue fotografie analogiche composte con precisione mostrano la spinta della natura a reclamare il proprio spazio.
I 'Garage Faces' in mostra fanno parte della serie 'Garage Stills' di Wessels. Se guardi da vicino puoi scoprire "volti nascosti" in queste opere. A breve la casa editrice Ludion (Bruxelles, Belgio) pubblicherà il libro fotografico 'Garage Stills & Fringe Nature'.

For her new series ‘Fringe Nature’, JACQUIE MARIA WESSELS captures the meagre bits of natural world that endures in the harsh, industrial landscapes on the outskirts of the cities. Her painterly images with a surprising color palette and lighting are as rough as they are poetic. During her previous project ‘Garage Stills’, Wessels gradually began to feel the need for contact with nature while photographing the wondrous universe of traditional garages. Although the viewer’s sensation is one of being immersed in a wild and natural place, small details within these images betray the presence of a factory or auto repair garage. Her precisely composed analogue photographs show nature’s drive to reclaim its own space.
The ‘Garage Faces’ on show are part of Wessels’ ‘Garage Stills’ series. If you look closely you can discover ‘hidden faces’ in these works. Shortly Ludion (Brussels, Belgium) will publish the photo book ‘Garage Stills & Fringe Nature’.

Jacquie Maria Wessels vive e lavora ad Amsterdam; ha studiato fotografia alla Gerrit Rietveld Academy e Social Psychology alla Vrije Universiteit, entrambe ad Amsterdam (NL). Wessels è diventata un’artista attiva nel campo della fotografia documentaristica, attraverso cui indaga le condizioni sociali e i contesti ambientali dei paesi in cui si reca. L’artista dedica periodi molto lunghi alla fase di esplorazione e di ricerca, prima di trasformare ciò che vede nei soggetti delle sue fotografie.

I lavori di Wessels sono esposti in tutto il mondo e fanno parte di collezioni private e di importanti collezioni museali, tra cui il Rijksmuseum di Amsterdam (NL), l'Huis Marseille - Museum for Photography di Amsterdam (NL) e il Surinaams Museum di Paramaribo (SR). Dopo essere stata ospitata nel 2021 al museo d’arte contemporanea PAN | Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli (IT) con la mostra personale 'Garage Stills', la prossima primavera l’artista sarà presente con una nuova mostra personale al Musée de la Photographie di Charleroi (BE) .

Jacquie Maria Wessels lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands; she studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Social Psychology at the Vrije Universiteit, both in Amsterdam (NL). Wessels has developed into an artist who is active in the field of autonomous and documentary photography and who likes to explore a topic for a longer period of time. Her subjects often serve as a framework for investigating the various social conditions and the environment of people.

Wessels’ work is exhibited worldwide and is in the collection of various museums and private collections including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (NL), Huis Marseille - Museum for Photography in Amsterdam (NL) and the Surinaams Museum in Paramaribo (SR). Recently the contemporary art museum PAN | Palazzo delle Arti in Naples (IT) showed the solo exhibition 'Garage Stills' with fifty of her works and coming spring Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi (BE) will show a solo exhibition.
