Flying to land in Cotonou is not not Benin, moreover it is not by chance, nor
by need of exoticism that envy is born. Me to Grand Popo for the Voodoo holidays, in
through Ouidah and the Gate of No Return, Here comes another one!
The border between Benin and Togo is a pencil stroke on the territory, a line on the
map, back and forth between Lomé and Grand Popo, by the red dirt track dried by the
hot breath of the Harmattan, allowed me to cross the Zangbeto: this Voodoo deity, this
night hunter. Under this twirling hut, an initiate, spokesperson of the gods, communicates with the spirits. This priest initiated in the Zidobo: power to disappear
instantly in space. Photography can she seize this disappearance?
And besides, the magic of animism, of belief in active souls outside of being
constantly projects back and forth between here and beyond.
Crossing the Door of No Return is in itself this experience…
Moreover, the photograph poses its aura on a real by freezing it in its figurative silence. It actively pushes this real out of itself and makes it magical. For me to do the photography is also a desire…
