Urbild.
E’ il titolo del progetto proposto e realizzato da Red Lab Gallery per la sede di Lecce, in tedesco si traduce come “archetipo” ma in realtà significa “immagine primordiale”. Il concetto di Urbild, desunto da Goethe, rievoca quel mondo di fertile ancestralità che ben si lega al Salento.
Il lavoro si basa sul dialogo tra un artista che utilizza soprattutto il medium fotografico e un altro che usa differenti mezzi espressivi. Francesca Loprieno e Gianfranco Basso durante la loro residenza artistica in Salento si sono confrontati col tema della memoria, esplorando i luoghi ed entrando in contatto con le realtà attive sul territorio, recuperando le origini della cultura salentina, tra folklore e letteratura, tradizioni manuali e miti ancestrali.
Francesca e Gianfranco sono entrambi pugliesi ma da anni vivono in altri luoghi, rispettivamente Parigi e Roma.
Questo distacco ha consentito loro di guardare con nuovi occhi alla terra pugliese (il termine “terra” è da intendersi non come suolo ma come insieme inscindibile di storia e cultura che su quel terreno si stratificano). Uno sguardo né interno né esterno ma ibrido. I loro occhi sono quelli di chi questa terra l’ha lasciata, di chi la conosce o meglio crede di conoscerla, ma di fatto la scopre “nuova”. Lavorare sulle immagini primordiali ha significato entrare in contatto con le radici di un territorio e scoprire che sono anche le proprie. I risultati di questo ampio progetto artistico e lungo percorso osmotico sono dunque opere nate dalla riflessione sugli archetipi.
Mare, luce, ricami e geometrie i poli concettuali di un pensiero che punta all’origine, ai motivi generatori della cultura territoriale, visti però come fattore propulsivo sul contemporaneo.

Urbild. It’s the name of the project proposed and realized by Red Lab Gallery in its branch in Lecce. In German it’s translated as “archetype” but it actually means “primordial image”. The concept behind Urbild, taken from Goethe, recalls a world of fertile ancestrality that resonates with Salento.
The work is based on a dialogue between two artists, one that privileges the use of photography and the other that uses different expressive tools. Francesca Loprieno and Gianfranco Basso, during their artist residency in Salento, confronted themselves with the theme of memory, exploring the places and coming into contact with the local activities, recovering the origins of the culture of Salento, between folklore and literature, manual traditions and ancestral myths.
Francesca and Gianfranco are both originally from Puglia, but live respectively in Paris and in Rome.
This distance allowed them to see with new eyes the Apulian land (“land” intended not as soil but as an undividable totality of history and culture that become embedded on that terrain). A look that was neither interior or exterior but hybrid. Their eyes are of those who left this land, of those who know it or better yet, believe to know it, but actually they discover it as “new”. The new was not in the thing in itself but in those eyes that were at last freed from the presumption of knowledge. Working on primordial images, therefore, meant getting in touch with the roots of a territory and discovering that they’re their own roots as well. The results of this broad artistic project and long osmotic journey were the artworks born from the reflection on archetypes.
Sea, light, embroidery, geometry are the conceptual poles of a thinking that aims at the origin, at the generative motifs of the territorial culture, seen as the propulsive factor of the contemporary.

Laureatosi in Pittura presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, nel corso degli anni si appassiona anche alla fotografia e alla scultura. Nel 2016 si aggiudica il “Premio di pittura” intitolato al grande paesaggista Giuseppe Casciaro e tiene la personale “Momentum” in Spazio MaTer a Roma. Nello stesso anno è tra gli artisti selezionati per il progetto di residenza d’artista BoCs Art a Cosenza. Nel 2017 tiene la personale “Needle Time” in Palazzo Castromediano Vernazza a Lecce ed è invitato al Beijing Contemporary Art Festival a Pechino. Nel 2018 coordina il progetto “Ricami di pietra”, promosso dal Parco Senza Confini di Cursi (LE) ed è invitato al VI Apulia Land Art Festival svoltasi presso Casa Rossa ad Alberobello (BA).
Sempre nel 2018 tiene la personale “I fili del tempo” presso la Fondazione per l’Arte e le Neuroscienze a Maglie (LE).
Nel 2019 inaugura la personale “Another day” al Museo Nuova Era di Bari. Nel 2020 presenta la grande scultura ambientale “Change is possible” presso il Complesso Monumentale di San Giovanni a Catanzaro. Tra le molte collettive si segnalano nel 2019 Dimorare al Museo Archeologico Genna Maria di Viallanovaforru (CA), Parallelism al Flat 1 Offspace di Vienna, Between Two Seas presso Santa Monica Art Studios in California; nel 2016 In-Perfectione presso la Pinacoteca Comunale d’Arte Contemporanea di Ruvo
di Puglia (BA), In to the wood all’ExComac di Soverato (CZ). È stato tra i finalisti al Premio Arte Cairo Editore, al Celeste Prize 2015 e al Donkey Prize III.
