Di tutte le armi da fuoco possedute da privati cittadini nel mondo per scopi non militari, la metà si trova negli Stati Uniti d’America. Il numero complessivo negli USA infatti supera quello della popolazione del Paese: 400 milioni di armi per 328 milioni di persone. Non è una coincidenza, né una questione di mercato: si tratta piuttosto di una “tradizione” originata da una garanzia costituzionale istituita con il Secondo Emendamento, ratificato nel 1791. In questa legge si rassicurano gli abitanti dei nuovi territori indipendenti che il Governo Federale non abuserà mai della sua autorità su di loro e si garantisce loro il diritto di possedere armi.
Duecentocinquanta anni dopo, il Secondo Emendamento è ancora radicato in tutti gli aspetti della vita americana.
Gabriele Galimberti ha viaggiato in ogni angolo degli Stati Uniti – da New York City a Honolulu – per incontrare orgogliosi possessori di armi da fuoco e per ritrarli insieme ai loro strumenti di difesa. Ha fotografato persone e armi nelle loro case e nei loro quartieri, anche in luoghi nei quali nessuno si aspetterebbe di trovare tali arsenali.
Questi ritratti, spesso inquietanti, insieme alle storie che li accompagnano, estrapolate dalle interviste effettuate, forniscono una visione inaspettata e non comune di ciò che oggi rappresenta realmente l’istituzione del Secondo Emendamento.
Half of all the firearms in the world that are owned by private citizens for non-military purposes are in the United States of America. The overall number, in fact, exceeds the country’s population: 400 million weapons for 328 million people. This is not a coincidence, nor is it a market-related issue; it is rather a matter of “tradition” and Constitutional guarantee, established by the Second Amendment, ratified in 1791. This law reassured the inhabitants of the newly independent territories that their Federal Government would not be able, one day, to abuse its authority over them, and they were guaranteed the right to bear arms.
Two hundred and fifty years later, the Second Amendment is still ingrained in all aspects of American life.
Gabriele Galimberti has traveled to every corner of the United States – from New York City to Honolulu – to meet proud gun owners and photograph them and their weapons.
He has photographed people and guns in their homes and in their neighborhoods, as well as in places where no one would expect to find such arsenals.
These often disturbing portraits, together with their accompanying stories based on interviews, provide an unexpected and uncommon view of what the institution of the Second Amendment really represents today.
