Il progetto fotografico di gruppo per il MIA PHOTO FAIR 2023, presentato dalla Galleria Luisa Catucci di Berlino intende offrire una posizione originale sullo spirito materno e sullo sguardo femminile, ispirandosi alla famosa teoria dell'artista, psicoanalista, psicologa clinica, scrittrice e pittrice Bracha L. Ettinger. La sua teoria, che ha rivoluzionato la psicoanalisi, ha messo in evidenza una dimensione femminile-materna-matrixial (matriciale) nella creatività artistica e nell'etica della cura e della responsabilità, che va ben oltre il genere di appartenenza e la sessualità. Il progetto presentato da Luisa Catucci è un'allegoria dei principi nutritivi femminili e materni della casa e della natura.

The photographic group project for MIA PHOTO FAIR 2023 presented by Luisa Catucci Gallery aims to offer an original position concerning feminine spirit and female gaze, inspired by the notorious theory by artist, psychoanalyst, clinical psychologist, writer and painter Bracha L. Ettinger. Her theories, which revolutionized psychoanalysis point out on a feminine-maternal-'matrixial' (matricial) dimension in artistic creativity and in ethics of care and responsibility, that goes way beyond gender and sexuality. The project presented by Luisa Catucci is an allegory of the feminine and maternal nourishing principles of home, and nature.

Elena Helfrecht (*1992) è un'artista visiva tedesca residente in Baviera. Ha completato il suo MA in Fotografia presso il Royal College of Art di Londra nel 2019, dopo aver studiato Storia dell'Arte e dell'Immagine presso la Humboldt-Universität di Berlino dal 2016 al 2017 e aver conseguito la laurea in Storia dell'Arte e Scienze del Libro presso la Friedrich-Alexander-Universität di Erlangen nel 2015.

Il suo lavoro ruota intorno allo spazio interiore e ai fenomeni della coscienza, emergendo da un contesto autobiografico e aprendosi al surreale e al fantastico, a volte grottesco. Intrecciando ricordi, esperienze e immaginazione, crea narrazioni inestricabili con molteplici strati di significato, caratterizzate da un'iconografia viscerale. Nel suo lavoro, la fotografia funge da connessione diretta tra il regno interno e quello esterno. Attraverso questo processo, mette in relazione le esperienze individuali con una storia collettiva e trasforma storie personali in comprensione universale. È influenzata dal folclore e dai paesaggi della sua casa e dalla sua continua passione per la Storia dell'Arte e la Psicologia.

Il lavoro di Elena è stato esposto in più di dieci Paesi, in mostre collettive e personali presso istituzioni e festival come South London Gallery (UK), Rugby Museum and Art Gallery (UK), Galleria Civica Cavour (IT), Technische Sammlungen Dresden (DE), The Benaki Museum / Athens Photo Festival (GR), Photo Vogue Festival (IT), Encontros da Imagem (PT), FORMAT Festival Derby (UK) e Palácio das Artes (BR).

Ha ricevuto due volte il British Journal of Photography International Photo Award, nonché il Sony World Photo Awards (2° posto), il Camera Work Award e l'AOP Student Awards. È stata anche nominata per il FOAM Paul Huf Award e selezionata come uno dei Bloomberg New Contemporaries, e come favorita dalla giuria per il Le Bal Award for Young Creation, tra gli altri. Le sue immagini sono state pubblicate e recensite in numerose pubblicazioni come ZEIT Magazin, Financial Times Weekend, British Journal of Photography, GUP Magazine, Der Greif e Source Magazine.

Ha tenuto lezioni e conferenze presso istituzioni come il London College of Communication, la Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, l'Università di Brighton, l'Arts University Bournemouth e l'Università d'Europa. Elena Helfrecht (*1992) is a German visual artist based in Bavaria. She completed her MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art in London in 2019, after studying Art and Image History at Humboldt-Universität in Berlin from 2016 to 2017 and receiving her BA in Art History and Book Science from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in Erlangen in 2015.
Her practice revolves around the inner space and the phenomena of consciousness, emerging from an autobiographical context and opening up to the surreal and fantastic, at times grotesque. Interweaving memories, experiences, and imagination, she creates inextricable narratives with multiple layers of meaning, characterised by a visceral iconography. Within her work, photography serves as a direct connection between the internal and the external realm. Through this process, she relates individual experiences to a collective history and turns personal involvement into a shared understanding. She is influenced by the folklore and landscapes of her home and her continuous passion for Art History and Psychology.
Elena’s work has been shown in more than ten countries, in group and solo exhibitions at institutions and festivals such as South London Gallery (UK), Rugby Museum and Art Gallery (UK), Galleria Civica Cavour (IT), Technische Sammlungen Dresden (DE), The Benaki Museum / Athens Photo Festival (GR), Photo Vogue Festival (IT), Encontros da Imagem (PT), FORMAT Festival Derby (UK), and Palácio das Artes (BR).

She was twice a recipient of the British Journal of Photography International Photo Award, as well as the Sony World Photo Awards (2nd place), the Camera Work Award and the AOP Student Awards. She was also nominated for the FOAM Paul Huf Award and selected as one of the Bloomberg New Contemporaries, and as a Jury Favourite for the Le Bal Award for Young Creation, among others. Her images have been featured and reviewed in numerous publications such as ZEIT Magazin, Financial Times Weekend, British Journal of Photography, GUP Magazine, Der Greif, and Source Magazine.

She has given lectures and talks at institutions such as the London College of Communication, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the University of Brighton, Arts University Bournemouth, and the University of Europe. She is a member of the German Photographic Academy, and VG Bildkunst. Elena’s work is held in private and public collections.
