Making the in-between visible
What do we expect a particular place to look like? Are we irritated when we realize that our first idea is wrong? The actual origin of the image loses meaning and we are forced to ask ourselves: what happens when we can no longer distinguish between the known and the unknown? Markus Kaesler draws with light. By using a simple pinhole camera, he returns photography to its optical foundations and shows how much artistic potential it holds.
In principle, the pinhole camera works in exactly the same way as a camera obscura, only it is much smaller: light hits light-sensitive material through a small opening and draws on it as unmanipulated as possible. Depending on the project, the artist sometimes simply builds the pinhole camera himself. The resulting works are then unique, often the destroyed camera can be found on the back and is purchased with the purchase.
For each project and each series, the artist chooses certain films and papers. Here he prefers the use of traditional materials and tries to use their properties so that the material and the image form a harmonious and coherent whole. "Paraphrasing a quote from Saul Leitner, I would say that I am sometimes amazed at how much you can accomplish as a photographer with something as simple as a pinhole camera. Edward Steichen said, "No photographer is as good as the simplest camera." With the simplest camera, I try my best."
