"Se siamo abituati a osservare il mondo dal nostro angolo di visuale è perché questo soddisfa un profondo bisogno di razionalizzare l’esistente: è all’interno di questo quadro che si muove Lia Stein per oltrepassare i labili confini del descrittivo: per farlo osserva ambiti, luoghi, superfici per ritrovare in loro un senso compiuto. Il punto di partenza diventa così il vuoto al cui interno le forme possano muoversi in piena libertà. Risplende su uno sfondo nero il rosso profilo archetipo del triangolo che si muove come una navicella spaziale, le pareti dora-te convergono in un punto dove creano un quadrato azzurro come il cielo, le linee circolari di un vortice definisce il confronto fra il bianco da una parte e l’avvicendarsi di alterni cromatismi dall’altra, le trasparenze attraversano lo spessore di parallelepipedi predisposti come sipari di un teatro immaginario. Così ora tutto si ricompone in un percorso visivo dotato di un fascino misterioso dove nello spazio si librano forme sospese." Roberto Mutti
"If we are so used to looking at the world from our own personal point of view, it is because this satisfies a deep-rooted need to rationalize reality. It is within this context that Lia Stein endeavours to transcend the ephemeral limits of mere description: to do this, she observes places, settings and surfaces, seeking to find meaning in what she sees. The starting point thus becomes a void within which shapes are totally free to move. Resplendent on a black background, the archetypal silhouette of a triangle moves like a space shuttle: golden walls converge at a point where they form a sky-blue square; the circular lines of a vortex heighten the contrast between the whiteness of one side and the alternating colours of the other; and transparencies cross the thickness of parallelepipeds disposed like the curtains of an imaginary theatre. So now everything is rearranged into a visual path with its mysterious charm, while suspended shapes soar into space." Roberto Mutti

Da fotografa autenticamente professionista, Lia Stein si muove da sempre su un doppio binario: quello del lavoro su commissione e quello della ricerca personale. I due campi, apparentemente lontani, sono per lei due aspetti dello stesso modus operandi che parte dalla curiosità, include la disciplina e approda a risultati sempre rigorosi. L’aspetto più evidente è la sua versatilità che l’ha portata a lavorare per importanti testate nazionali – da AD a Specchio, Amica, Anna, Arte e Antiquariato, Donna Moderna – e con editori quali Rizzoli, Mondadori, Electa, passando dal reportage alla moda, dai ritratti ambientati alle fotografie di architettura a quelle di animali realizzate per libri, calendari, enciclopedie e per campagne pubblicitarie, design di decorazioni fotografiche d’interni. La stessa poliedricità si trova nel campo della ricerca da sempre perseguito con un interesse ad ampio spettro che va dallo studio delle antiche tecniche di stampa a quello del rapporto fra immagine descrittiva e interpretativa in campo digitale applicato al paesaggio urbano e naturale. Sono aspetti che si ritrovano nelle numerose mostre personali e collettive che la vedono costantemente presente nel mondo delle gallerie e delle manifestazioni espositive in Italia e all’estero. Vive a Milano e lavora nel suo Atelier.

Reflecting the photographer’s truly professional spirit, Lia Stein’s activity has always taken two different directions: work on commission and artistic photography. For her, these two, apparently distant, spheres are two parts of the same modus operandi, which, starting from curiosity requires great discipline to obtain results that are always very precise. The most evident characteristic of her output is her versatility, which has led her to work for leading Italian magazines, such as AD, Specchio, Amica, Anna, Arte e Antiquariato and Donna Moderna, and publishers like Rizzoli, Mondadri and Electa, in a variety of areas, including photojournalism, fashion, portraiture, architecture, animals for books, calendars, encyclopedias and advertising campaigns, and photographic decorations for interiors. The same versatility is also found in her artistic work that has always comprised a broad range of themes, extending from the study of printing techniques of the past to that of the relationship between the descriptive and interpretive image in the digital field applied to the urban and natural landscape. These are aspects that are to be found in the numerous solo and group exhibitions of her work that have been staged in galleries and as part of artistic events in Italy and elsewhere. She lives in Milan and works in her Atelier.
