Photographing lions at the Southern Serengeti Plains of Ndutu (Tanzania) is never straightforward because they spend up to 21 hours resting each day, leaving a tiny window of opportunity that often arises once the light has disappeared. The moments leading up to and following sunrise offer the best chance to find active, alert lions, and this was one of those mornings where everything came together at the right time. It doesn't get much better than photographing a fully grown lioness staring right at you moments after sunrise in soft light beneath dramatic skies with a 35mm lens.
