At Mia Photo Fair we will present Gilles Lorin (*1973, Aix-en-Provence) and Charles Johnstone (*1952, New York).
Our selection shows a variety of techniques and subjects by these two very different artists. While Lorin uses a large-format camera and considers the printing process as important as the image itself, Johnstone´s focus lies on the composition. He is looking for lonely places with bright and luminous colors and often publishes these subject matters in series. Charles Johnstone’s classical color photographs are marked by a lack of people; they are square in format and combine perfect light with a graphically composed structure. Each project is accompanied by a limited-edition photo book that documents and emphasizes the serial nature of his work. He started with empty swimming pools, abandoned streets and playgrounds in Havana in 2006 and continued working in series in his hometown New York and devoted his hitherto last project to kiosks in Venice. Johnstone collects unusually silent moments like empty basketball and handball courts as well as fences. His prints are austerely composed and the square has become his trademark format.
